Today's dose of sunshine

I was looking through some old photos on one of my SD cards, and I found some of the pictures I took of the boys in the ginormous sunflower field in our old home town of Pittsford, NY.
These reminded me of hot summer days and provided a much-needed dose of pure sunshine on a cold, dreary day!

Tulips

One of my most favorite flowers in the universe are tulips. Maybe it's because they are so simple and yet so elegant, I don't know. They have a way of taking space that would otherwise be "blah", and turning it into the prettiest spot in the house. Our local Trader Joe's was having a special today on tulips--$1.99 a bunch! I indulged, and bought several bouquets to place all around the house as a reminder that this cold winter will soon come to an end!

8th Birthday Party and a LOT of Boys

We hosted Christopher's football-themed birthday party last night, and it was a ton of fun (and a lot of work, ha!!). This was the first time I've had a big party with school friends at our house. While it's tempting to find a venue and pay big bucks to have a party elsewhere, I felt kind of accomplished by having a special night at our home for Chris.
We had all kinds of plans for different games and such, but the kids really had their heart set on a game of football. Well, it's JANUARY and pretty darn cold, but that didn't stop them!
So we ate our pizza, went outside for a game! Greg was a pretty awesome ref/coach and kept the boys in line! As they came back in, we got pictures of all of the kids in front of the Football backdrop we bought. I am pretty happy with how all of those pictures turned out. The kids all wore their football jerseys and they looked so cute! Once that was over, we went back up for cake and ice cream and then it was time to hit the pinata for candy. By the time we got through all of that, the doorbell was ringing and parents were back to pick up their kids!

Yours truly with the new camera ;)

Birthday Party Ideas

This year, I am hosting Christopher's birthday party at my house. While it seems unheard of these days, I know several people who have done it for their kids with great success. My guess is that it will become one big play date, and that I will not need to have too many structured activities planned. I am planning a few good ideas, and have been pinning away so that I can cull down to the short few.

1. Photobooth:
I am thinking this will be fun to do! I have pinned a few ideas, and the backdrop should be super-easy. We have a party store right in our town, and I'm pretty sure I can get everything I need right there (or Michael's may have it too). Since the party is a football theme, maybe the streamers can be green and white like the field, and the boys can do football poses for the camera.
Remaining question will be- how do I print these things so the kids can take them home? Or do I just send out a photo album to the kids' parents? Not sure yet!

2. Games
I will have many planned, but also know we may not actually get to them. It's good to have a bunch of things ready to roll in case you need to deploy (aka kids getting bored), but I've heard from everyone that parties go by really fast!
- I am going to get small LEGO sets for all of the boys as favors, and will have them build them. Once done, a prize can be awarded to the kid (or kids if we do teams) who did the best job.
-Pin the tail on the donkey. This is a classic! I am going to see if there is a more modern theme (I've seen Angry Birds versions).
-Guess the number of LEGO in a jar, closest gets a prize. I saw this idea on one of the awesome blogs I follow, Calypso in the Country.

-Football Helmet pinata- we already found it at Target- so check!!
-For prizes, we can get sports-oriented things like trading cards, NFL Stickers and Books, and other goodies like that.

3. Food:
Chips, dips, pizza and a New England Patriot's cake.

Wish me luck!!

Eight

The many happy faces of Christopher
How is it possible! Chris is 8 years old already! He is a fun-loving, good-natured, positive and optimistic little boy! I am always impressed by how he just likes everyone for who they are, and when something doesn't go his way, he bounces right back pretty fast from it.
Second grade has been a lot of fun for him. This year, he is playing basketball at the YMCA as well as at school, and enjoys a lot of other sports too. Though yesterday was his real birthday, I'm planning to have a party at our house in a couple of weeks. Will have a whole house full of little boys! I've been researching ideas on Pinterest and blogs. I think we'll do a photobooth, pin the tail on the donkey, pinata, and some Lego games. Wish me luck!
